Anima(l/e)
The classical Greeks believed that yawning released the soul from one's body. Indigenous cultures of various lands believe that photographs steal souls, and by implication, that the photographer is the Devil himself. Amongst the natives of the tropics of Bolivia, this latter belief holds strong with flash photography.

In Anima(l/e), participants at a workshop conducted on 2011-03-09 titled Cómo Construir Una Cámara were shown the video Almuerzo Familiar. This is a previous installation of mine. The video is forty-five minutes long and consists of a single shot of a wall on Calle Independencia, Santa Cruz de La Sierra, Bolivia.

As the video played, a Canon G11 running CHDK was set up to shoot time-lapse images every two seconds. These images were shot with a flash.

The captured soul belonged to one Maria Isabel Rueda, of Cartagena, Colombia.
